IPTV Android TV: Complete guide and walkthrough
Android TV and Google TV run the same player apps as Fire TV, usually with fewer ads on the home screen. Most popular players install straight from the Google Play Store.

Essential recommendations for IPTV Android TV
Android TV and Google TV ship on a wide range of hardware. The steps are nearly identical on all of them:
- Streaming players: Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV (HD and 4K), Nvidia Shield TV and Shield TV Pro, Walmart's onn. 4K boxes
- Smart TVs: Sony Bravia, TCL and Hisense models with Google TV, Philips and Sharp Android TV models
- Projectors and boxes: any device that shows the Google Play Store on its home screen
If your TV says Roku TV, Fire TV, Tizen (Samsung) or webOS (LG), you're on a different platform. See the setup hub for those.
Option A: Install from the Google Play Store
This is the easiest and safest route.
- Open Apps (or Search on Google TV) and search for your player. TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro, XCIPTV and several others are listed in the TV version of the Play Store.
- Select Install. The app appears in your apps row.
- Open it and choose Add playlist or Login with Xtream Codes API.
- Enter your server, username and password exactly as given, or paste your M3U link.
Some players also offer a phone app or web page for entering long URLs. It's worth using, because typing a 120-character link with arrow keys is no fun.
Option B: Sideload an app that isn't in the store
If your chosen player isn't in the Play Store for TV, you can install it from the developer's website:
- Install Downloader or File Commander from the Play Store.
- Go to Settings, then Apps, then Security & restrictions, then Unknown sources (on Google TV: Settings, then System, then About; click Android TV OS build seven times to unlock developer mode first).
- Allow only that file app to install unknown apps.
- Download the app file from the developer's official site and install it.
Only sideload from the developer's own site. Repackaged "mod" versions of paid apps are a common way malware ends up on TV boxes.
Settings that improve playback
- Ethernet over Wi-Fi. The Shield and most Google TV TVs have an Ethernet port. The Chromecast and Google TV Streamer can use a USB-C hub with Ethernet.
- Frame rate matching. On Google TV, look under Settings, then Display & Sound, then Advanced display settings. In TiviMate, also turn on AFR (auto frame rate) in the playback settings.
- Hardware decoder. If a channel shows a black screen with audio, switch the player's decoder between hardware and software. Older Chromecasts struggle with some HEVC streams in software mode.
- Disable ambient mode or screensaver during long sports events if your device dims the picture.
Android TV vs Fire TV for IPTV
Both run the same apps. Android TV is a little cleaner and supports more audio passthrough options on high-end hardware like the Shield. Fire TV is cheaper and more common. If you're choosing between them, read our Roku vs Fire Stick comparison. Its notes on Fire TV largely apply to Google TV too.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between Android TV and Google TV?
Google TV is a newer interface that runs on top of Android TV. Apps are the same, and both use the Google Play Store. Google TV adds a recommendations-heavy home screen and a different settings layout, so some menu names in this guide vary slightly.
Is the Nvidia Shield worth it for IPTV?
If you want the smoothest experience with large channel lists, yes. The Shield has Gigabit Ethernet, a fast processor and excellent AI upscaling for HD channels. For most people, though, a Google TV streamer or a Chromecast with Google TV is plenty.
Are cheap unbranded Android boxes OK?
We don't recommend them. In June 2025 the FBI warned that millions of off-brand Android TV boxes were infected with BADBOX 2.0 malware, often straight from the factory. Stick to Google-certified devices from known brands.
